What We Do
Intergenerational Mural Project Malton Fold and Belfast Foyer
- Date: 05 March, 2010
- Centre: Belfast Foyer Bytes
- Category: Good Relations
This project is a collaboration between The Bytes Project, Malton Fold and The Simon Community. It commnenced in November 2009 and continues to blossom into an enduring and meaningful partnership extending across cultural, socio economic, gender and age. The project has focused upon inclusivity, forming friendships and diminishing the negative impacts of stereo-typing using art as a medium and the purpose to design two murals to be displayed; one in Malton Fold and one in Belfast Foyer.
The group decided a theme for the murals which was 2 trees to symbolise community and the journey from young to old and all that happens in between. The murals themselves are testament to the dedication and talent that all the participants brought to the group. This project was significant in challenging the barriers to mutual understanding through teamwork and group cohesion. Two of the elderly residents wrote poems for the tree both of which reflect the relationship between young and old perfectly.
The murals where launched at The Ulster Museum in Belfast on Friday 5th March. The launch was very well attended with Anna Lo (MLA South Belfast) commending the commitment and dedication of all the members of the group.
Four young people from Belfast Foyer will be receiving a Youth Achievement Award at Bronze Level for their contribution and hard work.
