What We Do
Meet The Artist
- Date: 30 March, 2010
- Centre: Upper Springfield Bytes
A place for art in the community.
Young people and local residents from the Upper Springfield area were invited to ‘Meet The Artist’ and discuss a proposed public artwork for the district.
Artist Kevin Killen has been commissioned by Belfast City Council to design a major art piece to be installed at the crossroads of the Springfield Road and the Whiterock Road.
As part of the public consultation process, Kevin Killen came to visit us at Bytes at our invitation. Kevin Killen specialises in large-scale sculptural pieces creating striking pieces in both stone and metal, employing modern crafting techniques to enliven public spaces.
He was looking for some themes from young people that they thought best represented themselves and their immediate community and was delighted when he received some material from our users.
Kevin has worked with many communities across Ireland, and his pieces reflect both the history and visions of local communities.
“I hope that the piece will reflect the importance of history and the mountain to the Upper Springfield area, and reflect the character of local people, who all bring great pride and a sense of community to the area,” said Kevin.
The pieces are loosely inspired by the giant heads found on Easter Island as pictured on the right.
We were recently in touch from a representative from Belfast City Council, who has informed us that they are still in the process of a final agreement and decision on the final piece to be installed.
We will, of course, keep you posted.
