Introduction to Tullycarnet and its community
Tullycarnet is notably one of the youngest communities in the Greater Belfast area. Tullycarnet, as a community, was established in 1970, housing working class people from Harland & Wolff Shipyard. Until the “Troubles” began both Catholics and Protestants lived in this rural community. Now Tullycarnet is predominately a Protestant community because of the effects of the Troubles on the Catholic population. Over the last few years Tullycarnet has seen major re-developments with new housing and extra money being pumped into the community for youth development and other community resources.
Tullycarnet has seen major changes with paramilitary murals being replaced with more cultural murals. One such mural is of James Magennis, a young catholic man from the Falls Road in West Belfast who was awarded the Victory Cross in WWII for his bravery and services. James Magennis is still the only Irish Catholic man to have ever been awarded the highest of British medals.
