Introduction to Derry and its community
Derry or Londonderry often called the Maiden City, is a city in Northern Ireland. Derry had a population of 90,736 people in the 2001 Census and is the second largest city in Northern Ireland, or fourth on the island of Ireland.
The name of the city and county of Derry or Londonderry is a subject of naming dispute between nationalists (mostly Catholic) and unionists (most of whom are Protestant), with nationalists calling it Derry, and unionists, Londonderry.
Derry Bytes was launched in September 1997 in commercial centre of Derry (The Diamond). It was officially opened in March 1998 by Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam with speeches by Project Director and Fabian Monds representing Board of Trustees.
Derry Bytes after securing new premises have moved within a youth homelessness project (The Strand Foyer), which is located in a much more accessible area with massive potential.
