Education and Training

The following directory of services aims to offer those browsing these pages an idea of what training and education is available in the North-West (Derry and Inishowen).  It is not intended to be a complete guide, but rather a taster of what is available.

(As this website is youth and user led, the participants decided what they, as individuals, wanted to add.  Therefore, the design and structure of the information listed below may change from point-to-point).

DERRY

Derry pages courtesy of Christopher Keenan, Derry Bytes.

This subject is broken down into a range of different topics. Each topic has lots of different information on education and training organizations located  in Derry.

Academic

In this topic there is a number of places where young people can go to get the needed qualifications to get the job of their choice.

Here are some of the places that young people go to seek further education (FE).

-North West Institute for Further and Higher Education  (NWIFHE)

-University of Ulster (UU

-The Open University (OU)

They can also stay in school and do sixth form which will get them the results to progress on to university.  School sixth forms will offer vocational A levels and GNVQs.  There's generally a more structured timetable than in a college.  some local schools offering 6th Form include...

 Oakgrove Integrated College  www.oakgrovecollege.com
 St Mary's College  www.stmaryscollege.sch.uk
 St Cecilia's College  www.stceciliascollege.sch.co.uk
 St Columb's College  www.stcolumbs.com/
 St Peter's High School  www.millenniumschools.co.uk/pub/derry/stpeters

For further information on Schools in the Derry area check out the Western Education and Library Board Website (WELB)

General Training

This Category is for the older people of Derry. This would be more suitable for the 18-24 age group.  The people in this age group would be in a programme such as  New Deal. To be eligible for this programme you have to be unemployed for 6 months or longer and in receipt of JSA (job seekers allowance) then you are eligible for a place on the programme.

NB - A full listing of Training and Education services available throughout the Inishowen peninsula is available from staff at Inishowen Partnership, St. Mary's Road, Buncrana.

The following information has been gathered using ALL Inishowen (Accessing Lifelong Learning) - a publication aimed at cataloguing Adult Education & Training Options in Inishowen.  This publication was produced by Inishowen Partnership Company in September 2003 and compiled by Monica Brown.  Reproduction of this information on this website has been granted.

As this information was gathered and produced in September '03, it would be suggested that interested parties should contact the individual organisations for up-to-date information.

The intention here is not to provide an exhaustive list, but rather to give the reader / browser an idea of the areas and courses that are on offer within or near the Inishowen Peninsula.
