Introduction to Ballybeen and its community
Ballybeen is a large, protestant working class housing estate on the outskirts of Dundonald in East Belfast, it was built in the 1960’s to accommodate the overflow of population, created through re-development, and was expanded in the 1970s and the 1980s.
It is the second largest housing estate in Northern Ireland with a population of around 6,000. It has approximately 2,500 young residents between the ages of 5 and 25 years of age. Although the estate is highly populated it only has a few recreational centres for the young people to attend.
